No need to "Try to Remember," PBS is helping out. Long running off-Broadway hit, The Fantasticks, will be featured on an upcoming TV special entitled 50 Years of The Fantasticks. The program will air on New York metropolitan area's PBS on July 30 at 12:30am and CUNY TV on July 31 at 8:30pm, August 1 at 12:30pm and August 2 at 7:30am, 1:30pm and 7:30pm.
Featuring performances by recent cast members Erik Altemus, Edward Watts and Kimberly Whalen, the special will also include interviews with the show's co-creator Tom Jones and original star Rita Gardner.
The Fantasticks originally opened on May 3, 1960 at the Sullivan Street Theater starring Jerry Orbach and Gardner. The production went on to play 17,162 performances before shuttering in 2002. After a four-year break, a new production directed by Jones opened at the Snapple Theater on August 16, 2006 where The Fantasticks continues its run. The score includes such hit songs as “Try To Remember,” “They Were You” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.”
